Decoding the path to an eco-friendly and organic beauty routine that is just as good for your skin as it is for the planet is indeed the need of the hour. In honour of Earth Day, we’ve spoken to four brands that have made doing good a part of their ethos.

Kiehl’s

This 160-year-old skincare giant has dedicated itself to the tagline of formulating a better future since its inception. Why they’re sustainable: Sustainability has always been a core part of Kiehl’s DNA, from sourcing its ingredients sustainably to using minimal, utilitarian packaging. 80% of the brand's formulas come in packaging that contains at least 30% post-consumer recycled materials and is recyclable or refillable. What’s Next: Moving forward the brand is hoping to strengthen both its global initiatives to sustain core social and environmental causes including Kiehl’s Future Made Better with the aim to reduce the brand’s environmental impact through its recycling and renewable energy initiatives and Kiehl’s Gives which supports three charitable initiatives around the world: environmental issues, AIDS research, and children’s causes.

AVEDA

Meet the pioneer of holistic beauty, the brand that has caring for the planet at the heart of its mission. Why they’re sustainable: Ayurveda, the ancient holistic system of healing has been at the heart of AVEDA's principles since the very beginning. The concern for the planet and the commitment to using organic products paved way for their Ayurvedic partnership with the Indian firm, Nisarga – which means “nature” in Sanskrit. The latter grows Ayurvedic herbs using organic and biodynamic agriculture and employs an environmentally friendly extraction method at the processing plant. What’s Next: AVEDA has now partnered with a charity: Water, a leading non-profit organisation dedicated to providing access to clean, safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) to people in developing countries.

DAVINES

Davines is an eco-conscious haircare brand that believes in creating a good life for all, through beauty ethics and sustainability. Why they’re sustainable: The brand was ahead of the curve, beginning its mission to reduce its carbon footprint back in 2006. From being a Carbon Neutral company to championing biodiversity and regeneration, Davines also promotes a circular economy. They use 100% energy from renewable sources, such as solar, wind, hydro, and biomass. What’s Next: As a tribute to Earth month, the brand is extra focused on preparing for various positive-impact projects and achieving net-zero emissions by the year 2030. For which they will now monitor all their CO2 emissions and define reduction targets in line with the latest international standards and with the goals of the Paris Agreement.

The first-ever French clean beauty brand, renowned for its top-tier botanical-powered products, supports a future where luxury and sustainability coexist. Why they’re sustainable: Since its debut in 2017, La Bouche Rouge’s vision has been to create luxury that makes life more beautiful, all the while protecting the earth for generations to come. Their clean formulations, made predominantly from ingredients of natural origin, refillable-plastic-free packaging and responsible sourcing allow the consumers to tend to their beauty while caring for the environment. What’s Next: The brand is committed to ‘Blue Beauty,’ creating in a way that is good for consumers, the earth, as well as those that produce their products. They are consistently improving on their formulas and going even further to innovate and create ever-more sustainable solutions.
