The ’80s was an era of excess. From fashion to pop culture, the vibe was bold and, for the most part, bright. For Fall/Winter 2021, Saint Laurent’s Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello embraces the decade for menswear. Offering a nod to the past, the designs are very much for the present. Cinematic in style, suiting and separates make up the bulk of the collection. Pants are slim and sometimes swapped out for straight-cut black jeans. Ankle grazing, a pop of a coloured sock, is for those toeing the bright side. Shirts and tops are tucked in, the base for a cardigan, knit sweater, tailored suit, or jacket. The latter sees styles arrive in bomber and roughed up denim borrowed from the ’50s, styled for the ’80s and brought to life in the ’2020s. It wouldn’t be Saint Laurent without a zip-up leather jacket or two. Some feature metallic pops of print, others offer a vinyl-like glow, and the rest are aged, worn-in already and perfect for hitting the street. The ’80s attitude when it comes to styling is more punk than pop, although primary shades of cobalt blue, canary yellow and a robust red feature throughout. Emerging in the ’70s, the punk movement blended into the next decade, which Vaccarello masterfully draws upon. If there was ever a time to experiment with prints, it’s now. Layer over a checked tee, contrast a leopard shirt with a striped jacket or turn your focus to accessorising. There’s no in-between with skinny scarves and skinny belts vying for attention over their oversized counterparts. A sleek black fedora and retro sunglasses are also key to the look, with badges making a return and ready to be pinned en masse onto a lapel.
